Tracing across financial systems
Asset tracing may begin with bank accounts, payment platforms, accounting ledgers, wire records, entity ownership documents, and digital asset wallets. Investigators develop a dated transaction chronology and evaluate whether transfers represent payment, exchange, internal movement, commingling, or another economic event.
Custodial and cross-border boundaries
Public blockchain records do not reveal every subsequent transaction. At centralized exchanges, payment intermediaries, and banking systems, internal ledgers and customer account records may be required to continue the trail. Cross-border transfers can require coordinated legal process and careful differentiation between the location of assets, account ownership, and ultimate beneficial control.
Evidence supporting recovery
Useful deliverables may include flow-of-funds schedules, counterparty maps, transaction references, supporting exhibits, and a prioritized list of third-party record holders. Recovery feasibility depends on asset status, legal remedies, jurisdiction, and the evidence available; tracing findings alone do not guarantee recovery.
